Originally from South Africa, CHEZWIN BENSON, also known as GRAFFTRIBE, now lives and works in Germany. For many years, the spray can has been his constant companion – what began as a classic form of graffiti has long since evolved into an artistic medium in its own right.
His artwork is not about depicting reality as accurately as possible. A cow, a bird, a person – everyone knows what they look like. Grafftribe finds the question of what happens when the paint itself becomes the central figure far more intriguing. Through soft gradients and numerous overlapping layers of spray paint, new moods emerge that cast familiar motifs in a different light.
It is precisely this idea that is explored in his current series, ‘Melancholy – Fading Reality’. The motifs remain recognisable, but the colour frees them from being a mere representation of reality. Grafftribe invites visitors not only to see the world as it is – but also as it can feel.
