As a reward for seven years of work, Hans receives a large lump of gold from his master. As this becomes too heavy for him on his long journey home, he swaps it for a horse, which he swaps for a gentle cow, which in turn he swaps for a pig, and so on, until he finally finds himself with a goose that would rather fly south. Hans gives it its freedom so that it can make the rest of its way home without a care in the world.
