“When I travel, I paint – when I paint, I travel.” This is how KERSTIN MEMPEL describes her working method, and it is indeed to be taken literally: her paintings are created directly on location, whilst travelling through Costa Rica, Spain, Italy and elsewhere. Using watercolours, coloured pencils and materials such as sand or seawater, she distils what she sees, reducing and condensing it – onto canvas or large-format watercolour paper.
